EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

*An Interview Session with the Principal of Socrates College, Ilorin, Mrs. Adetunji K.I., a native of Offa, Kwara State. She speaks with Yusuf Balikis and Abdulgafar Barakah on effects of Examination Malpractices and Importance of adding Field Excursion to Student Curriculum. Below is the excerpts:* Q: Good Morning Ma, it feels good to be here today, Can we get to know you? A: My name is Mrs. AdetunjiK.I, I am the principal of Socrates College, one of the best and leading school in Ilorin. Q: Okay, as the principal in this school, what steps have you taken to ensure there is academic integrity in the school? A: Academic integrity in the school is given utmost attention as it is crucial. it ensures that we have a fair and honest learning environment for all our students. some of the steps we have taken is to periodically evaluate our staff and students on proper conduct, also ensuring that the rules and regulation is being followed and any defaulters is punished. Q: So, what measures has the school taken to prevent exam malpractice among students? A: Like I said earlier, we want an honest learning environment for our students in Socrates college, and this is evident we the way take our C.A Test Serious. We ensure the students are well prepared by making sure the C.A or Exam Time-Table is released weeks ahead before the exam as this will give them the urgency to read ahead and cover up all their lapses. The students are also properly briefed on how to prepare for exam and what to avoid in the exams hall that could lead to malpractices. Q: Can you shed more light on how the students are educated on the consequences of engaging in exam Malpractice? A: We want students that are inquisitive, ask questions from teachers whey they are confused or need answers, that is why our motto is Ask Why to Know Why. Exam malpractice is so much frowned up here, that is why the management of the school has put everything in place to make sure students have a conducive environment for learning. In the past, students who have engaged in exams malpractice will face the school panel and depending on how grave the offence is, he/she is either suspended or expelled. We organize orientation where the students are made to know how this could be detrimental to their education when in higher institution, as they won’t be able to stand on their own or defend their results. They are sternly warned that whoever is caught in any examination malpractice whatsoever would face the consequences. Q. Any advice on how students can make the most of their time while in school? A: Yes, that is why we have extracurricular activities and clubs which includes, sports, literary and debating society, the cultural group, jet clubs, vocational activities and others. As this allows students to showcase their talents and entrepreneurship skills that abound in our prestigious school. Q: Thank you ma, Now let’s talk on the School Excursion, how does the excursion to Owu waterfalls contribute to the overall education of the Students? A: Yes, that’s a good question, the excursion to Owu Falls is a way to give our students an amazing experience of things they have read in their books or being taught by our exceptional teachers. It is to allow them connect both theoretical and practical aspects together which lead to more better understanding of the concept they have been taught. So Owu Falls is one of those experience to give the students and avenue to learn while still having fun and at the long run contribute to their overall education. Imagine reading about a waterfalls that is said to be the highest in West Africa in your geography textbook, but now here you are in reality walking through the trees and touching the waterfalls. Such a surreal experience. Q: What are the safety measures that have been put in place for this excursion? A: First of all, God is our shield and the one that has the perfect protection. But, the management on its own part has ensure there is proper security and all other safety measures has been put in place. The kings and chiefs where the Falls is located has also been informed that on this specific date, Socrates College will be coming for exploration. Q: Finally, should the excursion like this be integrated into the curriculum to enhance students learning? A: Ofcourse it should! We have Alumni and past students of the school who has always attested to the knowledge derived from going on this various excursion. Infact we visited this same Owu Falls 8 Years Ago and the students who visited then couldn’t wait to visit again and always commend the management for that amazing experience. So yes, it should be integrated. Thank you very much for your time ma, we remain grateful. You are welcome Socrates Media Team.
